...of Zanzibar
Zanzibar's talcum powdered beaches are some of the most spectacular in the world. Our sand literally squeaks as you walk through it, amazing but true!
We have many lovely areas of beach in Zanzibar. Some, however, are becoming much busier than others these days, since the construction of some large resorts in close proximity to each other. However, some beaches still stretch as far as the eye can see without viewing many people, and others are no more than small bays or coves. Remember that apart from one area on the north of the island, the tide retreats as far as a kilometre, twice each day according to the lunar cycle. During these times, swimming is virtually impossible, so if you are a keen swimmer we suggest you choose a hotel with a swimming pool. Otherwise you will have to wait for several hours for the tide to return. Please note that in some parts of the island seaweed harvesting is a major source of income to the village folk, this is more prominent on the south east coast.
Please note that topless sunbathing is prohibited anywhere in Zanzibar, and we also suggest a sarong or coverup if fishermen are in the same area.
Zanzibar's coastline is mainly a shallow slope allowing lush coral build-ups and providing a natural home for thousands of marine animals. Zanzibar enjoys warm currents almost year-round because of its position, so it's perfect for spawning and viewing a wealth of life just beneath the surface. Therefore many people come to Zanzibar to learn to dive and/or snorkel, with most resorts having their own in-house dive centres.
On the southern tip of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is close to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins which can often be seen after a short boat trip from the village.
